He made a living as a shochet, a skill learned in Europe from the renowned Rabbi Israel Salanter, leader of the Musar movement. Rabbi Manischewitz began to make Passover Matzo, first for family and friends, and then for the Cincinnati community. As demand grew, the B. Manischewitz Company was born. Rabbi Manischewitz introduced the use of gas-fired ovens, which were faster and provided a more consistent product.
